Zambia ask Fifa to move Togo game
The Football Association of Zambia (Faz) has written to Fifa asking for their 2010 World Cup qualifier on 6 September against Togo to be postponed.
The Zambian government urged Faz to approach football's world governing body as the country is currently mourning the death of President Levy Mwanawasa.
The late President was also the association's patron.
Fifa has told BBC Sport that it is currently looking into the request from Faz.
Zambia initially declared a seven-day national mourning period following Mwanawasa's death in Paris on 19 August, that has now been extended to 21 days.
That means that the Togo game would take place during the mourning period.
Mwanawasa, whose body is lying in state in Lusaka, will be buried on 3 September.
"I am very certain that people at Fifa and the Confederation of African Football (Caf) are understanding enough not to sanction such a match," sports minister Gabriel Namulambe told BBC sport.
"If anything, we will still be mourning our President since the period has now been extended to 21 days.
"It's our prayer as government that our request will be heard."
As part of the national mourning, Faz has already indefinitely suspended all local league action.
Zambia need to beat Togo to stand any chance of reaching for the next round of the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
